Information technology has become an essential component of modern enterprises. It serves not only as a supportive function that automates routine tasks and enhances process efficiency but has also become deeply embedded in the products and services across various industries. Organizations that may not identify as “high-tech” are increasingly utilizing IT for digital transformation and as a fundamental aspect of their evolving business models.
However, in numerous companies, business leaders often view IT merely as a technical function. While the IT systems, organization, and processes may be well-structured from a technical standpoint, they may not align effectively with business objectives. This misalignment can stem from shifts in business strategy, rapid or sustained growth, mergers and acquisitions, or competitive disruptions, leading to a gap between business requirements and IT deliverables.
IT Strategy Roadmapping
Our IT strategy consultants, equipped with expertise in both business and technology, can assist in crafting a cohesive IT strategy for your organization. Our methodology for developing IT strategy involves a targeted engagement that encompasses the following activities
Business and IT Alignment. We initiate the process by examining the mission, vision, goals, and strategy of the business to identify the implications for IT—specifically, what IT must become and accomplish to support the business strategy and generate value. Additionally, we explore what capabilities IT can introduce to establish the foundation for new business models.
IT Current State Analysis: In this phase, we evaluate the existing IT landscape, which encompasses the organization’s data centers, networks, hardware, documentation, and cloud computing utilization. We also analyze the condition of the current IT applications portfolio through a combination of online user surveys and face-to-face interviews. Each significant business system is ranked based on its importance to the organization, its management value, and its technical quality. This assessment provides preliminary insights into which systems should be prioritized for enhancement, replacement, or upgrade. Utilizing metrics from our affiliated IT research firm, Computer Economics, we benchmark IT expenditures and staffing levels, the extent of outsourcing and engagement with external IT service providers, as well as the adherence to IT management best practices. Additionally, we examine any forthcoming IT initiatives that are already in the planning stages.
IT Future State Vision: This phase involves envisioning a future where IT systems, technologies, personnel, and processes are completely aligned with the overarching business strategy. It may also include “art of the possible” workshops, where our IT strategy consultants investigate innovative technologies that are most pertinent to your business and recommend those for potential adoption. After establishing this vision, we compare it to the current state and perform a gap analysis.
IT Strategy Roadmap: This stage focuses on the development of specific initiatives within the IT roadmap, integrating them into a cohesive strategic narrative that outlines your direction and the means to achieve it. The final output is a strategic IT roadmap for the organization, detailing the desired future state, key initiatives, and implementation priorities. It also encompasses summary descriptions and budget estimates for each major initiative outlined in the IT roadmap. Strategic initiatives may involve new business application systems, enhancements, and upgrades to IT infrastructure.
